My wife Teri & I took a 4 day trip to Colorado on 9/29-10/02. The Aspens were very pretty this time of year. On Friday we arrived in Manitou Springs and got a motel room around 5pm. After unloading the Jeep we headed up US24 west to go to Cripple Creek, a old historic mining town. Teri did a little gambling and come out about $80 ahead and we headed back down to the motel. Teri thought I should mention that on the way down a 7% grade on US24 she was telling me to slow down and I told her I was saving my brakes lol. Well wouldn't you know it, after telling me at least 4 times, we passed a highway patrol running radar, and yes he pulled me over for 58 in a 45. I told him the same thing I told Teri and he let me off with a warning lol. Sat morning we got up and headed for the Cog Railway for a nice leisurely trip to the summit of Pikes Peak. After we got back down we went on US 24 west to Lake George then took CR77 north to Jefferson. There was a lot of beautiful scenery along this road. At Jefferson we took US 285 east to Grant then North over Guanella Pass. This scenic drive is way over rated. I was disappointed with this drive after reading how it was one of the best scenic drives in Colorado.
I'll tell you now don't waste your time on this drive for viewing fall colors. At the north end of the pass is the town of Georgetown. We went to get a room in Idaho Springs and was going to ride the Georgetown Loop Narrow Gauge Railway the next morning but they were sold out all day. Since we couldn't get on the train we decided to go over Berthoud Pass. We went through Tabernash on the way to Grandby and seen one huge group of glowing yellow aspens. We decided to see if we could get closer to them. We found a road which is CR 55. It goes from just south of Grandby to Hot Sulpher Springs over Cottonwood Pass. It was 15 Miles of the most beautiful aspens I have ever seen. From Hot Sulpher Springs we headed to the east to go over Rocky Mountain National Park.  We seen quite a few elk on the eastern side of the park & on the golf coarse in Estes Park. One of the elk on the golf course had an antler tip off another bull embedded in its neck. If you look at the photos I took you will see it sticking out. After taking photos at the golf course we headed  down through the Big Thompson Canyon to Loveland & on home. Between the both of us we took over 1400 pictures. I posted just over 1,000 of them for anyone to look at. I know it's a lot pictures but I put them up anyway. Enjoy!
